Karen Smith
Strengthening Macomb County Through Civic Learning and Leadership Development
Leadership Macomb’s Core Program brings professionals from across the county together to explore the systems, people, and partnerships that keep Macomb County strong. As part of this year’s curriculum, Cohort XXVIII participated in two cornerstone experiences: Government Day and Education & Workforce Development Day. Each session offered a deeper look at how Macomb County operates and how leaders can contribute to the region’s continued success.
Government Day
Strengthening Civic Understanding and Community Awareness
Government Day gave participants an in‑depth, behind‑the‑scenes look at how local government functions right here in Macomb County. Through tours, conversations with county officials, and exposure to essential public systems, the cohort gained a broader understanding of how decisions are made and how vital services reach residents.
The session highlighted:
- How county departments collaborate to support public safety, infrastructure, and quality of life
- The responsibilities of elected officials and county administration
- Key challenges facing local government and opportunities for community impact
- The importance of civic engagement and informed leadership in Macomb County
Participants walked away with a richer appreciation for the people and processes that keep our communities operating efficiently and safely.
Education & Workforce Development Day
Building Tomorrow’s Workforce: Education at Every Level
Education & Workforce Development Day focused on the essential role Macomb County’s educational institutions and workforce partners play in strengthening our regional economy. Throughout the day, participants engaged with leaders from K–12 districts, Macomb Community College, university partners, and workforce development agencies to explore how education connects directly to opportunity.
The session emphasized:
- Innovative programs preparing students for emerging career fields
- How industry and education work together to ensure Macomb County has a strong talent pipeline
- Career and technical education pathways that help students gain real‑world experience
- Strategies for retaining talent and supporting long‑term economic health within the county
This session reinforced that a thriving workforce begins with collaboration—and Macomb County is a model for building strong bridges between classrooms and careers.
