JUNIOR PROGRAM

BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF COMMUNITY MINDED LEADERS TODAY!

Junior Leadership Macomb (JLM) was established in 2013. Since then over 350 students have graduated from our program with 100% of them stating they would recommend this unique learning experience to other students.

Through career exploration, behind the scenes field trips, and a variety of interactive and introspective activities, participants are better prepared for life after high school. The program introduces students to the assets, issues, and leaders in Macomb County which expands their knowledge and network. Participants emerge with established and solid connections, heightened self-awareness, self-confidence, purpose, and direction.

To further assist participants, JLM remains an invaluable resource through their senior year by providing reference letters and job shadowing opportunities to those interested.

The program is designed for students entering their junior year of high school. It is open to students attending any public, private, or charter high school in Macomb County, as well as home schooled individuals.

The program includes 37 educational contact hours during our summer camp that runs from Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until  4:30 p.m. Our session topics include, but are not limited to, the Justice System, Healthcare, Leadership, and Community Service. Sessions include unique field trips, interactive activities, group dialog with fellow classmates and expert presenters, panel discussions, and introspection. Students also learn business etiquette, networking, personal finance, interviews skills, and much more to prepare them for their future beyond high school.

Serval sessions are offered throughout the school year, including attending a Macomb County Commissioners Meeting, an Arts Night Out at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and a group community service project.

Objectives of the Junior Leadership Macomb Program are to:

  • Strengthen preparedness for life after high school
  • Increase career readiness through a variety of career exploration opportunities
  • Broaden knowledge and understanding of the systems and leaders that influence and sustain our community
  • Cultivate a commitment to positively impact our community through volunteerism

Students must apply to the program by Friday, May 24, 2024 and will be notified of their acceptance by email by June 1, 2024. Selection is based on academic achievement, personal goals and assessment, eagerness toward community service, and references. We strive to create a diverse cohort of participants representing multiple school districts and backgrounds throughout Macomb County.
