The 2010 Census is quickly approaching and it is extremely important that everyone takes the time to respond to the census and encourages others to do so as well.  The information below, provided by Kay Risen, highlights some key points/information about the 2010 Census.

THE CENSUS BUREAU IS CHECKING ADDRESSES

Census workers are verifying and updating the Census Bureau’s address list to ensure a complete list for the 2010 Census.

Workers will identify housing units and identify other living quarters by going door-to-door starting mid-April, 2009.  Census takers will be wearing badges and knocking on doors.  Don’t be alarmed.

Why Should You Answer the Census?

$300 billion dollars in federal funds is distributed every year across the country for roads, healthcare, programs for seniors and more – all based on census numbers.  By taking just a few minutes to mail back your questionnaire, YOU can insure that your community gets heard.

Because we’ve had a census every 10 years since 1790, we know how far America has come.

When will the 2010 Census be conducted?

March, 2010:  Delivery of the Census Questionnaires to every address in the United States by the United States Postal Service

APRIL 1, 2010 CENSUS DAY – This is the day the Census Bureau sets as reference date for collecting your information.

Mid-March through Late April: The American Public returns their completed 2010 Census Questionnaire via the US Mail

Late April-Early July 2010:  NON-RESPONSE FOLLOW UP.  Canvassers will visit all households who did not return their Questionnaire by mail.  Canvassers will collect the information in person.

December 31, 2010: Apportionment counts delivered to President

April 1, 2011: All states receive redistricting counts

Organization Description

Organization Mission and Programs

The Warren Symphony Orchestra is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the richness of orchestral music to the families of Southeast Michigan.  Founded in 1972 by a dedicated group of civic leaders, the WSO performed its first concerts in 1974.  The WSO is a professional orchestra comprised of many of the area’s best trained and most well-known musicians.  Since that time, the WSO has expanded its vision to include community outreach through school music programs, including annual Youth Concerts and ensembles.  Orchestral members of the WSO provide guidance to children and young adults through ensemble assistance programs, meeting with young musicians to prepare for competition solos and ensembles.  The WSO is often called upon to provide ensembles for civic dedications and private events.  Warren Symphony Orchestra Mission Statement “To support and advance an orchestra of professional quality for cultural enrichment, entertainment, and youth education.”  To meet this mission and continue to provide the finest quality orchestral music to our families and youth requires an annual operating budget exceeding $300,000.

      Board Recruitment

Mentoring Solutions is recruiting quality candidates to join its Board of Directors.  We are currently recruiting volunteer board members to help with fundraising through business sponsorships, our annual golf outing, a large prize raffle, and individual donors.  The ideal candidate will already have contacts to help in these areas or are motivated to cultivate new relationships, and is willing to ask people for help.  Between quarterly board meetings, funding team meetings, and working with leads to help secure funding or mentors, board members average approximately 5-8 hours per month.  We want members who are willing and able to make a commitment to the board as a means to impact kids.

Mentoring Solutions is dedicated to improving the lives of children in Metro Detroit though school-based mentoring programs that focuses on life skills, goal-setting, and career planning.  Locally, programs impact children who live in Detroit, Highland Park, Howell, Monroe, Oak Park, Pontiac, Sterling Heights, and Warren.  The long-term goal is to impact youth throughout the United States.

Named the 2007 Innovative Mentoring Program of the Year for Michigan, Mentoring Solutions strives to not only create wonderful opportunities for its students and mentors, but also for its board members.  We have an initial orientation for members, continually support them in their efforts, and have on-going professional development.

Please consider serving on the board for one of the leading mentoring programs in Michigan!
